Aldershot Crematorium Refurbishment -

Aldershot Crematorium, a cornerstone of the community since its opening in 1960, is undergoing a significant transformation aimed at modernising its facilities and enhancing services for residents. This comprehensive refurbishment, approved by Rushmoor Borough Council with a budget of £4.726 million, commenced in May 2024 and is scheduled for completion by Spring 2025 .

Purpose of the Refurbishment

The decision to refurbish stems from a 2021 condition survey that highlighted the need for substantial repairs and upgrades. The project encompasses:

  • Installation of a second cremator to increase capacity.

  • Replacement of the roof and addition of external cladding.

  • Extension of the covered entrance and improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

  • Enhancements to insulation, installation of solar panels, and new windows to improve energy efficiency.

Councillor Maurice Sheehan emphasized the importance of this investment, stating it will provide "an improved bereavement service for our residents in a modern facility that will be fit for the 21st century" .

Interim Arrangements for Funeral Services

During the refurbishment, the main crematorium building is closed. However, cremations continue on-site to ensure uninterrupted service. Funeral ceremonies have been temporarily relocated to the restored Victorian chapels at Redan Road Cemetery in Aldershot. These chapels accommodate up to 60 attendees, with additional space for 30 more via live-streaming in an adjacent area.

Access to Crematorium Grounds and Memorial Services

While the refurbishment is underway, the crematorium grounds remain open to visitors during regular hours. However, the Hall of Remembrance is temporarily closed. To accommodate those wishing to honor their loved ones, the Books of Remembrance are accessible online

These options provide families with meaningful ways to commemorate their loved ones during this transitional period.

Looking Ahead

The refurbishment of Aldershot Crematorium represents a significant commitment to enhancing community services and environmental sustainability. Upon completion, the upgraded facility will offer improved comfort, accessibility, and efficiency, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of the community.
