The Holmes Family History
Brothers David, Andrew and John Holmes originally set up as family funeral directors, first in Hounslow and then Ashford Surrey as Holmes and Daughters funeral directors. The original family business, Holmes and Sons, prompted one of the girls in the family to ask ‘why sons not daughters?’ So when David and Andrew Holmes decided to operate as separate funeral directors, a slightly different name was needed for the new Ashford undertakers. David Holmes had two daughters, Madeleine and Anouska Holmes, and so the new funeral home in Ashford was named Holmes and Daughters funeral directors.
Sadly Andrew Holmes died aged just 35 in 1998, and in 2001 the family took the difficult decision to sell the business to a large group. John Holmes stayed to help manage it, but left after ensuring a smooth transition. Holmes and Daughters no longer has any family members involved.
In 2006, David Holmes decided he wanted to return to funeral service, and created what is now Holmes and Family funeral directors, with premises in Staines, covering Ashford, Laleham and Wraysbury. Sandhurst, covering the wider Camberley and Frimley area, Aldershot, which covers Farnham and Ash, and the main office, which is in Fleet, also covering Church Crookham and Yateley.
David Holmes was joined by some of his by now grown up children, with Oliver Holmes becoming responsible for day-to-day management of every funeral conducted. He is assisted by brother Toby and trainee funeral director Alex. The Holmes family has worked hard to gain an enviable reputation for quality and value, and is often asked to conduct high profile funerals.
Every person we look after is important, it’s humbling to be a trusted funeral director, and all of the people we care for get the same high standards. Holmes and Family offer competitively priced funerals to suit every budget. With locations in Sandhurst and Aldershot, the family conduct several military funerals annually, something that has become a real speciality.
Holmes and Family appeared on BBC 1’s ‘The Fixer’, with Alex Polizzi, who rebranded the business with the professional image seen today. David has recently appeared in a documentary on modern funerals on Radio 4, and with Jeremy Vine on BBC Radio 2, discussing changes in funeral traditions. Holmes and Family is now a well-known and trusted name in the world of funerals, locally and nationally, and it’s something that makes the whole Holmes family very proud.
